As many of you know, life has changed because of COVID-19. While many events, weddings, and celebrations have been put on hold, a moving date isn’t as flexible. Maybe you have been hired to a new job, decided to move in with family, or simply outgrown your current space. Whatever your reasoning is, following safety measures while moving during COVID-19 is crucial to your health. With that being said, here are three steps to follow to ensure your safety.

Step 1: Plan Ahead

A large part of moving during COVID-19 is planning. When preparing for a big move, ask yourself these questions:

  1. Have I booked a professional moving company?
  2. Have I reserved a moving truck if needed?
  3. Will I be traveling by car or plane? If by plane, have I bought my tickets?
  4. Do I have enough moving supplies?

We recommend making all your bookings early in advance to ensure everything is set in stone. In addition, familiarize yourself with COVID-19 protocols. Does the moving company you hired have a cancellation policy if you get sick? What should you expect when flying? The more you know, the more prepared you will feel!

Step 2: Practice Social Distancing

Whether you hired professional movers or gathered family to help, practice social distancing at all times. This includes staying six feet apart, wearing face coverings, and keeping your moving group small.

While it is courtesy to provide beverages and snacks for your helpers, consider only buying bottled drinks (such as water and soda) and individually packaged snacks (such as chips, mini hummus and pretzel containers, and gummies).

Lastly, have a large bottle of hand sanitizer for your helpers to use, and encourage others to wash their hands frequently during the moving process.

Step 3: Prep Your New Home

Before you unpack your boxes or arrange your furniture, sanitize your new space. Have cleaning materials on hand that you can use once you arrive. Disinfect high-touch surfaces first, including but not limited to doorknobs, light switches, and toilet handles. Wipe down your cardboard boxes and plastic bins. Sanitizing your new home will help you and your helpers feel more comfortable and safe from COVID-19.

Thankfully, for new residents at Summer Crest Apartments, our maintenance team is highly trained in COVID-19 disinfection protocols. All sanitized apartments are sealed with a sticker on the front door, letting you and our team members know that the space is ready. Your health and well-being are our priority!

Moving during COVID-19 may seem daunting. If you are prepared, practice social distancing, and sanitize your new space, you will help limit hiccups throughout the moving process. By following these steps, you and your family can feel safe and prepared to move into your new home.
